Venus Fly Traps Carnivorous Plant

Venus Fly Traps (Dionaea Muscipula)

Venus Fly Traps Carnivorous Plant (Dionaea Muscipula)

Venus Fly Trap is the most well known of all Carnivorous Plants. It is usually the first Carnivorous Plant that budding growers purchase, and I believe it is the plant that inspired the mythology of the plants that can  trap people.

For many people the Dionaea is the most interesting plant because it is active, that it responds with trappig mechanism towards its prey. Most Venus Fly Traps have six traps on each bulb. If you see a plant that has twelve leaves or more, then you are looking at two plants, as the bulb of the original plant has divided into two.

To obtain viable seeds the easiest method is to get flowers from two different plants and brush one against the other. Then in a couple of months these flowers will die, producing a black seed pod, containing small black seeds.

Care

If your plant is growing in such a way that it has long leaves with tiny   traps which go black and die, then it is highly likely the plant is not   getting enough sunlight. As a guide your Fly Trap requires at least four hours sunlight during summer.

If the tall leaves begin to droop downwards this is usually an indication  that the humidity is too low; that is, the atmosphere is too dry. When    this happens cover the pot with a plastic bag to reduce the sunlight.   Black leaves and traps should be cut off and removed from the growing area.
